Proof/evidence

I get weary when I hear people say they interpret things and therefore that is evidence for their belief. If you read the bible/koran/gita/book of mormon and get some sensation in your mind that does not constitute proof for god. I'm also patient when I hear people abuse the word theory. Incompetent Design by any other name is not a theory. There is no testable hypothesis. So, if you hear someone say theory or proof, let's all work together not to use them improperly.

Well here I go. I usually try not to discuss my religious thoughts, because I usually get attacked for one or both sides. I was brought up Catholic!(which I never practiced and nolonger claim)As a child I was tought about the things one is tought in a house like mine. I was never forced to attend chirch, and for that I am thankfull. As a teen and now adult, as much as I really wanted to belive there is an all-mighty power to save our souls, I could not belive in parts of the story. First of all evolution is a proven fact! Second if God is so great and poerfull, why create hell? I would never condem or attack anyone who chooses to belive or not. It is true, in my opinion, that there is no proof that God did or did not exsist. I think what ever holy book you read is a good story and comforting to some. However there are holes. I do not belive that people either way should be suppressed. If you want to have a silent pryer while at school fine, but the teachers should not teach or force religion. If someone wants to say the pledge say it, if you dont...dont. Just like anything else there are religious extremeists in the USA. My neighbor once told me that Allah and Budah were fakes and our God was the only true God. Yeah, he is off the deep end. Christians who look down on others because they do not believe in christianity are extremeists. As we know to well there are Muslum extremeists. As are Atheist's who look down on Christians or other religions. People should have an open mind. Just because you belive n one thing or another or not at all, does not mean you are wrong or a bad person. The storys about JC are interesting to me, do I belive they are all true, No not by any means. How much is fact and how much is fiction is something we may never know. I think people can believe what they want, just dont force them on me!

Hello Mark,

I finally got my hands on the book and have started reading the first essay (Religious Illiteracy by William Edelen). If you're interested in hearing my thoughts on it or just want proof that I am reading it let me know and we can figure out how to discuss the book. Sorry it took so long, thanks for your patience.

Now, I saw a comment you posted on another blog, and I was intrigued to see how you would pull it off. But you don't. And I quote you here: "An atheist would never mention God or religion in ANY form, be it Pagan, Wiccan, Christian or Muslim, becuase those religions DO NOT EXIST to an atheist."

Priceless.

And so you know I wasn't knocking you, I was trying to imply that I got the joke. Seriously...if it was that simple of a two-way street, no one of faith would ever bug you.

bob,
That wasn't me saying that. It was a pain in the rear guy who knocks my comments on our local news website. I can say the sky is blue and this guy will say something like "atheists only call it blue because they deny the creator, god". I think the guy is a juvenile.

Jessica,
Please confirm which book you got.

I've been trying to reply to your comment on my family blog but between blogger having problems and my ISP having issues I've written my reply twice and posted zero. Sorry.

I got "The Book Your Church Doesn't Want You To Read" and so far I've read the Acknowledgements, Preface, Introduction, Karl R. Popper's opening essay, "Religious Illiteracy" by William Edelen and "What We Must Do" by Bertrand Russell. I'm wondering, since this is a collection of Essays, if it's ok to jump around in reading this or should I read straight through? What is your suggestion?

I appreciated "Religious Illiteracy" (I'm going to re-read "What We Must Do") and actually really agreed with his conclusion. I thought the essay well written and concise (I should learn how to say so much in so few words) and very clear.

Thank you for the book suggestion. It will take me a bit to get through it but I will continue to keep at it. The essay format will make it easier. Again, thanks.

Oh, I forgot to say that you handled the "tiff" (is that what it was?) on the OTM blog very well and I agree with Ir- your mom must be very proud. You are a great and open person, I appreciate that.

Thanks, I don't have a suggestion how to read, I read cover to cover or skim if it's a article. Nutrideath was pushing my last nerve with the prophecy thing but he apologized so I'm cool with it.

Jess,
Do you know who you'll vote for as far as Governor?

My blog finally let me post a comment today (a huge improvement since this morning I couldn't even see the thing) and I just answered that. I'm frustrated, though not as bad as I was with the last presidential election (after standing in line for an hour I walked out and didn't vote and have felt guilty ever since). The short answer is that I'm not sure but I think I'm voting for Bell.

Cool, I'm leaning for Bell as I heard him talk in northwest Austin maybe 3 months ago but I truly will hope it comes down to a choice other than trying to unseat Perry.

What did you like about Bell when you heard him talk in Austin? The only information I've really had has been through the press and his website. As much as I agree with you about wanting this election to be a choice rather than un-seating Perry, right now, the only thing I do know for sure is that I'm not voting for him.
