CS Lewis

This is a personal request for this guy to post on news8. It has nothing to do with the author named CS Lewis. Atheism 101 lessons.

I wouldnt have voted because I dont want to be affiliated with any party at this time. Mark, quick, what made you turn to atheism? I looked at your blog and I don't see anything in there that tells us why you are an atheist. You ask two questions and make some comment about CSLewis and out news8 austin posts, but that is about it. Is there a link I am missing? I did read about your encounter with a Unitarian preacher and your discussion about Jesus Christ and how you do not believe he existed. Well, if you dont believe he existed why would you quote the words he spoke that where printed in the bible? You contradict yourself. Also, what does the tooth fairy, Santa Clause or the Easter Bunny have to do with atheism. Do you even know where they came from? I bet not.

my reply: I realized that all the stories of jesus and god were similar and just repeated the same idea with no proof. I also discovered the bible was the work of man just like every other book written and none of it is scientific so it fits appropriately in the category like all other god books, mythology.

C snell,
I don't disbelieve in Jesus, I acknowledge he never existed like Santa. I utilize the best tool to show the contradictions within xianity, the bible itself. That's confirmation not contradiction. The Easter bunny is one more mythology figure that came from Eostre, another mythology like xianity. Santa was named after a man who gave out gifts and Dec 25 is from Mithra, Sol Invictus and other myths. You lose the bet.

Mark, Actually Santa did exist. And he did not give out gift solely on 12/25, he gave gifts to the poor year round. Santa is a variant of a European person folk tale based on the historical figure Saint Nicholas, a bishop from the region that is now present-day Turkey, who gave presents to the poor. This inspired the mythical figure of Sinterklaas, the subject of a major celebration in the Netherlands and Belgium, Germany (where his alleged date of death, December 6, is celebrated the evening before on December 5), which in turn inspired both the myth and the name of Santa Claus (actually a mispronunciation of the Dutch word "Sinterklaas" by the English settlers of New Amsterdam (later renamed New York)), in those countries Saint Nicholas is celebrated as a distinct character with a religious touch, Santa Claus is also celebrated on Christmas eve. The modern Santa Claus is thought to be a composite character made up from the merging of quite separate figures. You are right in the Possible Pre-Christian origin on the Easter Bunny, I can go to Wikipedia also. The Easter Bunny came from German Protestants who had wanted to retain or re-introduce the Catholic custom of eating colored eggs for Easter, but did not want to introduce their children to the Catholic rite of fasting, which was the reason for the abundant availability of eggs at Easter time (they were forbidden to Catholics during the fast of Lent, and thus eggs laid during Lent were stored until the feast). The idea of an egg-laying rabbit came to the United States in the 18th century. German immigrants in the Pennsylvania Dutch area told their children about the "Osterhase" (also: "Oschter Haws") or Easter Bunny. Only good children received gifts of coloured eggs in the nests that they had made in their caps and bonnets before Easter. Presumably, the Oschter Haws laid them when they were not looking. A hundred years later Jakob Grimm wrote of long-standing similar myths in Germany itself (noting many related landmarks and customs), and traced German legends of Ostara back to at least the 7th century. To say the Jesus Christ does not exist because there is no proof is quite a mis-statement. There is proof that abounds as to the existence of, as you put it on your message blog, JC does exist. Jesus of Nazareth, aka. Jesus Christ, did exist. There is documented proof that abounds. If he did not exist than I do not understand why the Jewish church acknowledges his persecution and why the Romans acknowledged the mans death. Yes it is true that history is changing, it changes yearly as we discover knew information about our past. And yes the bible is contradictory, that is because it is made of two time frames: Old Testament based off the Jewish bible and New Testament based off Christ’s teachings after his birth. The old is based on God’s frustrations with man and the new is based off of God’s visit to man in the form of Jesus Christ and his teachings to love one another. True Christians are not always perfect people, you tell me someone who is perfect and I just might keel over from excitement. Oh, one last note, morality is common sense. You can be an atheist and have common sense not to go out and murder, rape, torture, steal and all those other things that make society the oh so evil place it is today.

MJ: I went to your blog. I see nothing that proves that God does not exist either. It looks like CSLewis tore your "logic" all to hell with facts and real logic. Hope you don't like Madolyn O'hare......

-Good Ol' R

TXatheist responds: You're right and there is no proof Santa Claus didn't come to my house Dec 25. There is no proof that the Easter Bunny does not hide eggs. There is no proof that the tooth fairy does not put a dollar/quarter under your pillow when you lose a tooth. Why is that? You can't prove something that doesn't exist...does not exist. It's calling proving a negative.

Snell,
The works of Flavius Josephus were altered and every scholar admits it. The Ossuary Box was forged. The Shroud of Turin was dated to the 12th century. The stories of Jesus were written much after his alleged life so it's heresay at best. There is no proof of JC. Also, I said Santa doesn't exist. I'm talking about the modern day idea of a guy with super powers, flying reindeer and sled. That's present day mythology. You not understanding this is the only mis-statement.
